Datasets can be narrowed down using a taxonomic criteria, whether by species group (e.g. benthos, fish, algae, pigments) or by both scientific and common name. 2) The data catalogue is the easiest way to access nearly 1000 datasets available through EMODnet Biology. Datasets can be filtered by multiple parameters via the advanced search from taxon, to institute, to geographic region. Each of the resulting datasets then links to a detailed fact sheet containing a link to original data provider, recommended citation, policy and other relevant information. Data Products - EMODnet Biology combines different data from datasets with overlapping geographic scope and produces dynamic maps of selected species abundance. The first products are already available and they focus on species whose data records are most complete and span for a longer term. It aims at gathering experience for a later permanent operational system. The main objective of the biology project was the development of an online marine biological data portal allowing the access and download of marine biological data across Europe. The biological lot focused on gathering available information and on the temporal and spatial distribution of species composition, abundance and biomass of phytoplankton, zooplankton, angiosperms, macro-algae, invertebrate bottom fauna, bird communities, sea mammals and reptiles. You can consult the final report of the biology preparatory action. - 2013-2016: In the follow up project, a consortium of 21 government agencies and research institutes with national and international expertise in marine biological data monitoring and data management will build further upon the work carried out during the biological preparatory action of EMODnet and will deliver data, metadata and data products of surveys in the water column and on the sea bed from phytoplankton, zooplankton, angiosperms, marcoalgae, benthos, birds, mammals, reptiles and fish occurring in European marine waters. The EMODnet biological data portal will provide access to different thematic databases and to several long-term national marine biological monitoring datasets from all European regional seas. The project will identify and focus on biological data types, species, species attributes, sampling methods and biological indicators to support the variety of legislations, and will create biological data products to support environmental legislations including the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. - 2017-2021: the multi-resolution phase: a consortium of 22 governmental agencies, research institutes and international organizations with national and international expertise in marine biological data monitoring and data management build further upon the work carried out during the previous phases and will deliver data, metadata and data products of surveys in the water column and on the sea bed from phytoplankton, zooplankton, angiosperms, macroalgae, benthos, birds, mammals, reptiles and fishes occurring in European marine waters. We identify and focus on biological data types, species, species attributes, sampling methods and biological indicators to support the variety of legislations, and will create biological data products to support environmental legislations including the EU MSFD. - 2021-2023: Phase IV follows on and continues to expand on the work developed previously. The consortium comprises 23 organisations, with four partners qualified as IODE Associated Data Units (ADU) and ten others as IODE National Oceanographic Data Centres (NODC). The partnership is geographically distributed and includes all European OBIS nodes (EurOBIS, MedOBIS, OBIS UK, OBIS Blac Sea), collaboration with other international initiatives is also ensure via the consortium with the incusion, of, e.g. IODE and ICES. This phase will see an expansion of our webservices, the implementation of management practices for other types data like -omics and images and the migration to the Central Portal (expected in October 2021). Several new data products will be created and made freely available and a closer engagement with our stakeholders will ensure that our work will better answer their requirements.
