ATLANTIC_CH04_Product_3 / Internal Energy time-series (1915-2014): Heat and Kinetic

North Atlantic basin average at Pentadal (5-year) resolution time-series of the ocean heat storage (upper 700m) and kinetic energy. Use gridded information to calculate the local heat storage and average kinetic energy as a 5 year average and then calculate the basin average.

Purpose
To produce a time-series of the Internal Energy of the North Atlantic Ocean in 2 components. Heat storage and Kinetic Energy. This EMODnet Atlantic Checkpoint data product is the result of a “challenge” stress test forming a part of a group of tests to evaluate marine data capacity according to set user requirements. The products do not constitute a formal climate assessment and should not be used as such.

This EMODnet Atlantic Checkpoint data product (the “Product”) is the result of a “challenge” stress test specified by the call for tenders No MARE/2012/11. The challenge partners ( "the producer") were commissioned to perform a number of tests to evaluate marine data according to set user requirements. This product and any resultant data and metadata produced is a consequence of these tests and provided for interest only. The Product is provided on an “as is” basis, and the producer disclaims any and all warranties, conditions, or representations (express, implied, oral or written), relating to the Product or any part thereof, including, without limitation, any and all implied warranties of quality, performance, suitability or fitness for a particular purpose to the full extent permitted by law. The Producer and the Atlantic Checkpoint partners accept no liability for loss suffered or incurred as a result of reliance on the Product or any output of its use. The Producer shall not be liable for any economic loss, loss of profit, loss of business or contract, depletion of goodwill or otherwise, in each case whether direct, or indirect or any indirect loss whatsoever (howsoever caused) including loss or damage suffered as a result of an action brought by any person which arise out of or in connection with the use of the Product or inability to use the Product

Use limitation

In specifying the specification for this challenge the goal was set to determine North Atlantic basin average at pentadal (5-year) resolution time-series of the ocean heat storage (upper 700m) and kinetic energy.

For both components gridded format data were available that could be used to compute basin averages.

- Spatial resolution of 1 degree is suitable for global scale analysis;

Well validated data source, with high quality QC.

Data are available in a well documented format including metadata.

Limited temporal coverage for both products.

For the kinetic energy the size of the data files made it impractical to complete the full product for more than a single year despite the theoretical availability of 20 years. The single year results demonstrated calculation of the product but would require greater time and resource.

Statement
Kinetic energy estimates of the Atlantic basin as a whole from observation is a possibility using satellite or reanalysis (models with data assimilation) derived products from Copernicus back to 1993. The attempt at the challenge used Copernicus dataset 025[ GLOBAL OCEAN PHYSICS REANALYSIS GLORYS2V4 (1993-2015)] to calculate the mean kinetic energy of the basin. Due to the extreme size of data files it was only possible to download and process 1 year of the 20 year dataset. As such the product can be considered as a proof of concept.
