Statement
This layer is linked to the following study: "Characterizing Soft-bottom Megabenthic Communities of the Mediterranean Continental Shelf: A Biogeographic Approach", 2025, Jade Millot, Sandrine Vaz, Tarek Hattab, Christopher J. Smith, Carlos Dominguez-Carrió, Beatriz Guijarro, Grégoire Certain, Vasilis Gerovasileiou, Vincent Georges, Caterina Stamouli, Michele Casini, Chiara Manfredi, Emanuela Fanelli, Germana Garofalo, Marie-Claire Fabri, Daniela Massi, Angélique Jadaud, Adriana Profeta, Pierluigi Carbonara, Evgenia Lefkaditou, Slavica Petović, Athanasios Evangelopoulos, Nikolaos Kamidis, Ioannis Thasitis, Jurgen Mifsud, Kelly Camilleri, Valentina Lauria. This study is submitted but not yet published.
Description

The package ExDet (Extrapolation Detection tool) (Mesgaran et al., 2014) was used in R to assess the level of environmental extrapolations in areas where bioregions have been predicted by the Random Forest modelling.

This tool is based on Malhanobis distance and quantified the magnitude of environmental dissimilarity between the environmental space known by the model (environmental range of the calibrating dataset) and the environmental space of the projected space.

Two raster layers were produced per sub-basin (Western Mediterranean, Central Mediterranean, Adriatic Sea, Aegean Sea).

Description
A raster layer of "Analoguous conditions" was obtained and represents the pixels where environmental conditions are similar with the calibrating dataset ranges. This layer is ranged between 0 and 1, 1 corresponding to a complete similarity both in term of individual range of environmental predictors, and in terms of combination of predictors.
Rationale
Assess and map the areas of analoguous environmental conditions.
Description
A raster layer of "Univariate extrapolation" was obtained and represents the pixels where environmental conditions are outside the range of individual predictors used to calibrate the model. This layer is ranged from infinite negative values to 0.
Rationale
Assess and map the areas of univariate environmental extrapolation.
