Fuzzy coded longevity dataset of European marine benthic invertebrates

The ICES Working Group on Fisheries Benthic Impact and Trade-offs (WGFBIT) has developed an assessment framework based on the life history trait longevity, to evaluate the benthic impact of fisheries at the regional scale. In order to apply this framework to the Mediterranean sea, several Mediterranean longevity databases were merged together with existing North-East Atlantic ones to develop a common database. Longevity was fuzzy coded into four longevity classes: <1, 1-3, 3-10 and >10 years. Both benthic mega and macrofauna organisms are included in this dataset. Further details about both the purpose and the methodology may be found in ICES (2022) and Cuyvers et al. (2023). The result of the final dataset merging is one dataset containing the fuzzy coded average longevity (and standard deviation) for 2264 taxa and for each, the number of databases used.

Statement

Seven longevity databases were available:

1. BTA_EMODNET_LifeSpan-OBeauchard from Beauchard et al. (2017) (616 atlantic taxa)

2. Full_list (323 Mediterranean taxa from the Italian coasts)

3. Lista delle specie con score (323 Mediterranean taxa observed during MEDITS from GSA 18, Italian Southern Adriatic Sea)

4. Longevity data (219 Mediterranean taxa observed during Solemon rapido trawl survey and GAP2 epibenthic data from GSA 17, Italian Northern Central Adriatic Sea)

5. LongevityDatabaseMega&Macrofauna241121 (164 megafauna and 889 macrofauna taxa observed in GSA 20,22,23, Greek waters in Aegean Sea, Cretan Sea and Eastern Ionian Sea)

6. Cefas traits data from Clare et al. (2022) (1025 taxa from the North-East Atlantic)

7. Glandiceps talaboti (1 Mediterranean taxa, based on expert jugement)

In order to collate the databases, they were first adjusted to the same format. For each of them, the general procedure consisted in uploading the taxon lists in WORMS to match them to their accepted scientific names and AphiaID (WoRMS Editorial Board, 2022). Second, the longevity classes were transformed into four classes: <1, 1-3, 3-10 and >10 years. Fuzzy coding was adjusted where three longevity classes were transformed into four longevity classes and the longevity classes were standardized in case their sum did not equal to one.

Once prepared in a common format, the 7 datasets were merged to obtain a unique dataset containing for each available taxon, the average fuzzy coded longevity, its standard deviation and the number of occurrences in the seven available databases. Each taxon is further described by its 'kingdom', 'phylum', 'class', 'order', 'family', 'genus', 'aphiaID' as defined in Worms in 2022.
