ATLANTIC_CH05_Product_3 / Spatial layer of absolute annually averaged sea level trend (in mm/year) for period of 100 years

This product attempt to follow up on the sea level rise per stretch of coast of the North Atlantic, over past 100 years as follows:

• Characterization of absolute sea level trend at annual resolution, along the coasts of EU Member States (including Outermost Regions), Canada, Faroes, Greenland, Iceland, Mexico, Morocco, Norway and USA;

The stretchs or coast are defined by the administrative regions of the Atlantic Coast:

• from NUTS3** administrative division for EU countries (see Eurostat), and

• from GADM*** administrative divisions for non-EU countries.

** Third level of Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics

*** Global Administrative Areas

For absolute sea level trend for 100 years we extract the information from grided sea level reconstruction datasets (using a combination of satellite and tide gauges) and extrapolate it to the nearest strecth of coast. The product is Provided in tabular form and as a map layer.

Purpose
This characteristic handles the ability to follow up on the sea-level rise per stretch of coast of the North Atlantic (* ie. including North-East Atlantic, USA, Canada and Ooutermost Rregions), over 100 years, to assess whether the current available marine datasets are available and appropriate to the use case, as well as to indicate gaps in the current EU data collection framework.

This EMODnet Atlantic Checkpoint data product (the "Product") is the result of a "challenge" stress test specified by the call for tenders No MARE/2012/11. The challenge partners ( "the producer") were commissioned to perform a number of tests to evaluate marine data according to set user requirements. This product and any resultant data and metadata produced is a consequence of these tests and provided for interest only. The Product is provided on an "as is" basis, and the producer disclaims any and all warranties, conditions, or representations (express, implied, oral or written), relating to the Product or any part thereof, including, without limitation, any and all implied warranties of quality, performance, suitability orfitness for a particular purpose to the full extent permitted by law.

The Producer and the Atlantic Checkpoint partners accept no liability for loss suffered or incurred as a result of reliance on the Product or any output of its use. The Producer shall not be liable for any economic loss, loss of profit, loss of business or contract, depletion of goodwill or otherwise, in each case whether direct, or indirect or any indirect loss whatsoever (howsoever caused) including loss or damage suffered as a result of an action brought by any person which arise out of or in connection with the use of the Product or inability to use the Product

It was possible to produce an average annual absolute sea-level rise for 100 years for most of the length of coast required due to the existence of a published (in a ISI journal) global sea level reconstruction of absolute sea level combining satellite altimetry data and tide gauges data. The reconstruction data, although not available in public database was provided by the author of the reconstruction. The limitation is that the sea level reconstruction is accessible as a gridded data and had to be extrapolated to each stretch of coast losing some accuracy. Moreover, the reconstructed sea level only reaches 65 degrees north and therefore some coast to the north is not filled.

Statement

Data source not publicly available, but under request to the author of the reconstruction (via the scientific publication associated to it). The data is free (no charge) and easy to understand the format.

It meet the requirements of the targeted product except for the fact that the data is accessible as coarse resolution gridded data and therefore had to be extrapolated to assign a value to each stretch of coast, therefore loosing accuracy.

Moreover, the reconstructed sea level only reaches 65 degrees north and therefore some coast to the north is not filled.
