ATLANTIC_CH10_Product_3 / North Atlantic area divided into regions showing priority areas for surveying

Identified areas across the north Atlantic which have been flagged as priority locations for quality bathymetry data, in the context of expanded shipping traffic and port expansions.

The reference to determine the priority survey areas in combination with shiping routes and port locations are the bathymetric data sources used for product 2( GEBCO, EMODnet bathymetry, USGS and CHS) and the depth uncertainty derived of Product 2. The adequacy assessment of the input characteristics of Product 3 is limited to the shiping routes and port locations.

This EMODnet Atlantic Checkpoint data product (the “Product”) is the result of a “challenge” stress test specified by the call for tenders No MARE/2012/11. The challenge partners ( "the producer") were commissioned to perform a number of tests to evaluate marine data according to set user requirements. This product and any resultant data and metadata produced is a consequence of these tests and provided for interest only. The Product is provided on an “as is” basis, and the producer disclaims any and all warranties, conditions, or representations (express, implied, oral or written), relating to the Product or any part thereof, including, without limitation, any and all implied warranties of quality, performance, suitability or fitness for a particular purpose to the full extent permitted by law. The Producer and the Atlantic Checkpoint partners accept no liability for loss suffered or incurred as a result of reliance on the Product or any output of its use. The Producer shall not be liable for any economic loss, loss of profit, loss of business or contract, depletion of goodwill or otherwise, in each case whether direct, or indirect or any indirect loss whatsoever (howsoever caused) including loss or damage suffered as a result of an action brought by any person which arise out of or in connection with the use of the Product or inability to use the Product

It is quite possible to build a product indicating priority areas for safer navigation.

Use limitations

This product is supported well with data and is only limited by the availability of future planning information and certain assumptions concerning shipping requirements.

It would also benefit from improved bathymetry, particularly in coastal areas and a quantitative measure of uncertainty for each bathymetry measurement.The uncertainty value produced is relative and does not indicate a quantitative error. See evaluation of ATLANTIC_CH10_Product_2.

Assessment of input "Shipping Routes" Characteristic

Availability of input data

Data was obtained from the following sources :

- European Commission European Atlas of the Seas - Motorways of the sea;

- European Commission European Atlas of the Seas – Ferry Routes;

- Anatec ShipRoutes database, Anatec Ltd

Appropriateness of input data

- Input data sources were used to plot major shipping routes for the study area of the whole Atlantic Ocean.

- The information was clear and adequate for the purposes required in the challenge.

Assessment of input "Harbour size and max vessel size" characteristic :

Availability of input data

Data was obtained from the World Port Index database. This gave port location and physical characteristics of the port.

Appropriateness of input data

The simple statistics of harbour size and maximum size of vessel able to use the port were available and easy to use and plot.
