Ireland’s marine environment is a national asset that yields multiple commercial and non-commercial benefits, for example seafood, tourism, recreation, renewable energy, oil and gas, cultural heritage and biodiversity. Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) ensures that these activities can take place in an efficient, safe and sustainable way. Directive 2014/89/EU Establishing a Framework for Marine Spatial Planning was transposed into Irish legislation in 2016. The Directive ensures balanced development and aims to reduce conflicts between sectors, encourage investment, increase cross-border cooperation and protect the environment. Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) describes the process of planning how best to use marine-based resources. MSP attempts to balance the different demands for using the sea, including the need to protect the marine environment, when and where human activities take place and ensuring these activities are as efficient and sustainable as possible.
