ATLANTIC_CH07_Product_1 / Area where bottom habitat has been disturbed by bottom trawling (number of disturbances per month)

Data from a number of different sources have been integrated to provide new perspectives on fishing activities. Vessel Monitoring Systems (VMS) record and transmit the position and speed of fishing vessels at intervals of two hours or less. Fishing time can be calculated from the VMS data and combining this parameter with vessel logbook data, maps of fishing effort and intensity at different spatial and temporal scales can be calculated. The statistical software package “R” is used to extract the required information then re-interrogated to produce maps of fishing effort or intensity per month and year. The use of Automatic Identification System (AIS) data was not considered as combining AIS data with fisheries logbook data would pose issues namely; the ability of the AIS system to be switched off, only mandatory on vessels > 15 meters in length, cost involved to purchase data, and confidentiality.

Restricted - This EMODnet Atlantic Checkpoint data product (the “Product”) is the result of a “challenge” stress test specified by the call for tenders No MARE/2012/11. The challenge partners ( "the producer") were commissioned to perform a number of tests to evaluate marine data according to set user requirements. This product and any resultant data and metadata produced is a consequence of these tests and provided for interest only. The Product is provided on an “as is” basis, and the producer disclaims any and all warranties, conditions, or representations (express, implied, oral or written), relating to the Product or any part thereof, including, without limitation, any and all implied warranties of quality, performance, suitability or fitness for a particular purpose to the full extent permitted by law. Limited: The product fails in most aspects to meet the objectives but meet some.

A comprehensive evaluation of fishing effort in the Atlantic Ocean (FAO Fishing Areas 21, 27, 31 and 34) could not be fully achieved, primarily due to data sensitivity and restriction policies surrounding the use of VMS and fishing log book data. A partial assessment of FAO Area 27 (Atlantic Northeast) was possible as access to UK and Estonia fishing effort data was granted. Estonian data related to fishing effort in the Mediterranean and was discarded. However fishing effort is underestimated as UK data accounts for a fraction of the total fishing activity present in this area. Further assessment of FAO fishing areas 21, 31, and 34 (Atlantic Northwest, Atlantic Western Central, and Atlantic Eastern Central) could not be concluded due to a lack of VMS and Log book data. Global fisheries capture statistical data relating to areas 21, 31 and 34 suggest that foreign flag vessels from the EU, Russian Federation, Japan and the Ukraine actively engage in fishing activities. It is impossible to determine if these vessels are engaged in bottom trawling as access to logbooks containing gear type used could not be obtained. The overarching opinion is sensitivity and restrictive policies surrounding VMS and Log book data need to be reviewed. An accurate assessment of the impact caused by bottom trawling cannot be achieved when access to appropriate data remains restricted.
