Extreme waves approaching coastlines

This dataset provides extreme waves (Hs: significant wave height, Hb:breaking wave height, a proxy of the wave energy flux) simulated with the WWIII model, and extracted along global coastlines. Two simulations, including or not Tropical Cyclones (TCs) in the forcing wind field, are provided.

Statement

All details on the model settings, forcing procedure, and validation are given in the associated paper: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-024-50929-2

A brief summary is given here:

The simulations are run on a global 1/2° grid, and outputs are extracted at ~50km offhsore global coastlines and islands. Points are sampled every 25km, 13km, or 4km respectively for large, medium-sized, or small coastal polygons.

Hs (significant wave height) and Hb (breaking wave height, a proxy of the wave energy flux) are extracted.

Two simulations are performed:

- one including realistic tropical cyclone forcing (CYCL)

- one without tropical cyclone forcing (NOCYCL).

The wind forcing is based on ERA5 winds, but tropical cyclones are either replaced by a parametric formulation (CYCL simulation), or filtered out (NOCYCL simulation).
