ATLANTIC_CH06_Product_1 / Collated data set of landings by species and year, for mass and number

The challenge attempts to collect data on landings for the North Atlantic sea basin (i.e. north of the equator, excluding Caribe, Baltic, North Sea and Artic) and to compute: mass and number of discards by species and year. In addition, by-catch of fish, mammals, reptiles and seabirds. Data are presented in an Excel spreadsheet.

Purpose
The Fisheries Management challenge aims to collect fish catch information for the whole sea basin on landings, discards, and by-catch of fish, mammals, reptiles and seabirds (mass & number by species and year), to assess whether the current available marine datasets are available and appropriate to the use case, as well as to indicate gaps in the current EU data collection framework.

This EMODnet Atlantic Checkpoint data product (the “Product”) is the result of a “challenge” stress test specified by the call for tenders No MARE/2012/11. The challenge partners ( "the producer") were commissioned to perform a number of tests to evaluate marine data according to set user requirements. This product and any resultant data and metadata produced is a consequence of these tests and provided for interest only. The Product is provided on an “as is” basis, and the producer disclaims any and all warranties, conditions, or representations (express, implied, oral or written), relating to the Product or any part thereof, including, without limitation, any and all implied warranties of quality, performance, suitability or fitness for a particular purpose to the full extent permitted by law. The Producer and the Atlantic Checkpoint partners accept no liability for loss suffered or incurred as a result of reliance on the Product or any output of its use. The dataset include landings data in mass but do not include landings data in numbers. These data are estimated to be used in stock assessments. The estimation of landings in numbers for a given species is made from samplings conducted by observers at sea with the purpose to gather biological data for evaluations. Landings in numbers are inputs in a scientifc process and not usually offered to the general public.

Landings are provided on a yearly basis since 1950 for all the countries in the study area. These landings are provided only in mass and the product would have been more complete with the landings in number, but as commented in the description of the product none of the countries in the study area submit date on landings in number.
