Map the occurrence of ice at 1-degree resolution over different periods of the last century (1915-2014, 1965-2014, 2005-2014, 2009-2014). For each entire period (100, 50, 10, 5 years) find and map all cells of the 1 degree grid that experience ice conditions in at least 1 month.

Purpose
To identify regions of the North Atlantic (IHO,1953) that experience ice conditions during different periods of the last 100 years. This EMODnet Atlantic Checkpoint data product is the result of a “challenge” stress test forming a part of a group of tests to evaluate marine data capacity according to set user requirements. The products do not constitute a formal climate assessment and should not be used as such.

This EMODnet Atlantic Checkpoint data product (the “Product”) is the result of a “challenge” stress test specified by the call for tenders No MARE/2012/11. The challenge partners ( "the producer") were commissioned to perform a number of tests to evaluate marine data according to set user requirements. This product and any resultant data and metadata produced is a consequence of these tests and provided for interest only. The Product is provided on an “as is” basis, and the producer disclaims any and all warranties, conditions, or representations (express, implied, oral or written), relating to the Product or any part thereof, including, without limitation, any and all implied warranties of quality, performance, suitability or fitness for a particular purpose to the full extent permitted by law. The Producer and the Atlantic Checkpoint partners accept no liability for loss suffered or incurred as a result of reliance on the Product or any output of its use. The Producer shall not be liable for any economic loss, loss of profit, loss of business or contract, depletion of goodwill or otherwise, in each case whether direct, or indirect or any indirect loss whatsoever (howsoever caused) including loss or damage suffered as a result of an action brought by any person which arise out of or in connection with the use of the Product or inability to use the Product

Good: The product meets more than 50% of the objectives specified by the challenge
Use limitation

• Most objectives were achieved for the product (both spatial and temporal coverage)

• Spatial resolution of 1 degree is suitable for global scale analysis;

• Well validated data source, with high quality QC.

• Data are available in a well documented format including metadata.

• For comparibility between the maps the same upstream data is used

The maps the occurrence of ice at 1-degree resolution over different periods of the last century (1915-2014, 1965-2014, 2005-2014, 2009-2014). The use limitation is that for each entire period (100, 50, 10, 5 years) the product maps all cells of the 1 degree grid that experience ice conditions in at least 1 month. As this is a climate challenge the prioritization is for comparibility such that the same upstream data is used for each of the periods. The more modern time periods (2005 on) there would be higher specification upstream data available. These are focused on the region to the north of the North Atlantic (IMO,1953). Further research required on the requirements of an appropriate metric for ice in the non-arctic North Atlantic.
