ATLANTIC_CH04_Product_5 / Total ice cover (1915-2014)

Pentadal time-series of the area in the North Atlantic (IHO, 1953) where ice occurred. On a 1 degree grid find all cells that experienced ice in at least 1 month of each 5 year period between 1915 and 2014, and then calculate the total area that these cells covered.

Purpose
To make a pentadal timeseries of the total ice cover of the NorthAtlantic. This EMODnet Atlantic Checkpoint data product is the result of a “challenge” stress test forming a part of a group of tests to evaluate marine data capacity according to set user requirements. The products do not constitute a formal climate assessment and should not be used as such.

This EMODnet Atlantic Checkpoint data product (the “Product”) is the result of a “challenge” stress test specified by the call for tenders No MARE/2012/11. The challenge partners ( "the producer") were commissioned to perform a number of tests to evaluate marine data according to set user requirements. This product and any resultant data and metadata produced is a consequence of these tests and provided for interest only. The Product is provided on an “as is” basis, and the producer disclaims any and all warranties, conditions, or representations (express, implied, oral or written), relating to the Product or any part thereof, including, without limitation, any and all implied warranties of quality, performance, suitability or fitness for a particular purpose to the full extent permitted by law. The Producer and the Atlantic Checkpoint partners accept no liability for loss suffered or incurred as a result of reliance on the Product or any output of its use. Limited: The product fails in most aspects to meet the objectives but meet some.
Use limitation

The purpose is to make a pentadal timeseries of the total ice cover of the NorthAtlantic, but we focussed on ice occurence as ice is present in only a very small area and for a short period each year within the region which is defined to be south of the Arctic.

• Temporal coverage and spatial coverage meets requirement

• Spatial resolution of 1 degree is suitable for global scale analysis;

• Well validated data source, with high quality QC.

• Data are available in a well documented format including metadata.

• The product is not a quantitative measure of ice cover but the region that experiences ice within each pentade.
